Wealden MP Nus Ghani has congratulated the villages of Mayfield and Fives Ashes for winning the 2018 Parishes In Bloom competition.
The Parishes in Bloom competition recognises the gardening and horticultural talents of local communities. This was the first year that Mayfield and Five Ashes had entered the competition, scoring 89 out of 100 and winning the top prize.
The judges highlighted several factors that contributed to the high score, including describing Mayfield as “quintessential”, a pleasure to visit, well organised and demonstrating considerable civic and local pride.
The awards were held at the Amex Stadium, with the top prize accepted by Monica Aitken and Chris Lilly on behalf of Mayfield and Five Ashes Parish Council.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “It’s wonderful to see the hard work and dedication of Mayfield and Five Ashes Parish Council recognised by winning this prestigious award.
“Wealden is home to so many beautiful villages and Mayfield is a fine example of what makes East Sussex the most pleasant and attractive county in the country.
“I’d like to congratulate and thank everyone at the Parish Council for their efforts in making Mayfield as beautiful as it is – a real joy to visit. I’m sure they could go even further in future years in other In Bloom categories.”
