Bewl Water meeting

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, chaired a meeting with neighbouring MP for Bexhill and Battle Huw Merriman, Wealden District and East Sussex County Councillors Johanna Howell and Bob Standley, representatives of Bewl Water management, Southern Water, and the Bewl Rowing and Canoe Clubs to discuss opportunities for improvements to the current provision of water sport facilities at Bewl Water reservoir.

Bewl Water is the largest body of inland open water in the Southeast, and a fantastic local asset attracting thousands of visitors every year to enjoy the open water and leisure activities, generating revenue for the region. It is the home of Bewl Bridge Rowing Club and Bewl Canoe Club, volunteer-run Community Access Sport Clubs that have been operating at Bewl Water since the 1970s.

The clubs have been working closely with Southern Water and Bewl Water management team on proposals to improve their current facilities and great progress has been made on agreeing plans to build a new facility on site. This meeting was an opportunity for all stakeholders to receive an update on the proposals.

Nusrat Ghani said: “Bewl Water is a superb facility for residents of East Sussex and Kent, open all year round, providing miles of scenic pathways to walk, cycle, run or ride, and other healthy outdoor activities including water activities. I was pleased to meet with various stakeholders to discuss the progress of the plans for upgrading the current facilities for the Rowing and Canoe Clubs and I commend Bewl Water management and both sports clubs on their productive work to date. I look forward to this positive working relationship to continue, to ensure that Bewl Water continues to be a fantastic local asset and a unique facility in the Southeast.”
