Wealden MP Nus Ghani recently attended an event celebrating 50 years since the Uckfield and District Preservation Society began maintaining the Nutley Windmill.
The Uckfield and District Preservation Society maintain heritage across Wealden, including Bridge Cottage in Uckfield and the Nutley Windmill.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, the Society opened the new Granary Visitor Centre with Nus Ghani in attendance.
The Nutley Windmill is a historic landmark on the Ashdown Forest and is a Grade II listed building, one of only five open-trestle mills to survive in Britain today, thanks to the hard work of the Preservation Society.
The Windmill is one of only three windmills to feature on a Royal Mail stamp, after appearing on a set of first-class stamps last summer.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said:“The Nutley Windmill is a fine example of the wonderful heritage we have across Wealden, and the continued hard work of the Uckfield and District Preservation Society has been so important.
“Despite the rain, I was delighted to attend the opening of the new Visitor Centre and join in the festivities celebrating five decades of first-class restoration and care.
“Thank you to everyone has helped preserve this classic Wealden landmark through the years, especially to Rev Antony Shaw, who was one of the original members of the restoration 50 years ago, and to Brian Pike who does such a wonderful job managing the restoration now”.
