Wealden MP Nus Ghani recently visited the Port of Southampton, in her role as the Minister for Maritime and Shipping in the Department for Transport.
Nus was hosted by the Chairman of Maritime UK, David Dingle, who showed Nus around the Port and the Britannia Cruise Ship. Nus met with the talented workforce at the Port who ensure that Southampton is at the forefront of UK and global shipping.
Many of the workforce were cadets from the local area. Earlier this year, Nus doubled the Government’s financial support of maritime training to £30 million, in tandem with encouraging more young people to get into engineering in the Year of Engineering.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “The south coast is home to many fantastic shipping hubs, including Newhaven Port, Shoreham Harbour and the Port of Southampton.
“Shipping is a critical industry for the south east. The maritime sector in Southampton supports over 120,000 jobs, with more than £75 billion worth of trade moving through the region every year.
“It was wonderful to meet so many inspiring and enthusiastic cadets. It’s clear that the future of British shipping is in safe hands thanks to the fantastic cadets schemes in the port and shipping sector”.
