Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed £15 million of investment by the Conservative Government into charities and projects that support women and girls through the Tampon Tax Fund.
The Tampon Tax Fund allocates funds to projects that improve the lives of women, using the money generated from the VAT on sanitary products which European Union regulation enforces into UK law.
The new £15 million of funding will be spent on projects that tackle sexual violence, address social exclusion among BAME women, and improve mental health and wellbeing of women across the country.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “It is fantastic news that women and girls will receive dedicated investment from the funds generated by the Tampon Tax. I am proud to have voted for this fund which will have a significant impact on the lives of disadvantaged women.
“While we are unable to remove VAT on sanitary products within the constraints of EU law, I am delighted to see that the money it generates will be made available for the benefit of women and girls.
“Since I was first elected, I have worked with fantastic local women’s charities in Wealden on issues such as endometriosis and domestic violence. Both of these important concerns are raised regularly at my MP surgeries in Hailsham, Uckfield, Crowborough, Wadhurst, Forest Row and Mayfield.
“This funding is welcome news for young girls and women and their families across Wealden, and I will continue to fly the flag for Wealden charities and campaign on women's health, mental health, tackling domestic violence and inclusion campaigns which support families across Wealden.”
