In recent weeks, Nus Ghani MP has publically, and consistently, called for an inquiry into the management of Southern Rail and Network Rail, following disappointing results in the spring National Rail Passenger Survey, news of a proposed rail strike and a House of Commons debate on the poor performance of Southern Rail. Nus wrote to the Transport Committee to request the set up of this inquiry, and she has now received a reply from the Committee Chair, Louise Ellman MP.
In the letter, Ms Ellman commits to questioning Department for Transport ministers about Network Rail on 20 July, and proposes a wider inquiry into the railway network, rather than Southern specifically.
Nus said, "Although I am pleased that we are moving closer towards holding the management of Southern Rail and Network Rail accountable, we need an inquiry into the performance of Southern specifically. The recent spring National Passenger Rail Survey made clear that my constituents have been enduring a standard of service that is simply not good enough, and an inquiry is the best way to show we are taking the problem seriously and not permitting business as usual. I also repeat my call for Southern to meet regularly with their commuters, so that their concerns can be properly taken on board."
