Wealden MP Nus Ghani recently met with Dawn Whittaker, the Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive at East Sussex Fire and Rescue.
As Chief Fire Officer, Dawn has overall command of delivering East Sussex Fire and Rescue’s strategic aims. Dawn and Nus discussed a number of mutual priorities.
Only 5 per cent of fire service staff are women, and one of Dawn’s aims is to encourage more women into the industry, a target which Nus shares and has actively worked towards within Wealden.
Dawn also sits on the National Water Safety Forum, working closely with the coast guard to ensure that the East Sussex coast is incident free. As the Maritime Minister in the Department for Transport, Nus is particularly concerned that East Sussex has the third highest coast related fatalities in the country.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue do a wonderful job keeping Wealden residents safe. Thanks to the hard working firefighters, officers, control room operators across East Sussex.
“My meeting with Dawn was incredibly productive, where we discussed the issues that matter to my constituents, whether it’s speeding on East Sussex roads, fires, or maritime incidents.
“It’s great to see the drive and passion that Dawn has for her work and I know that we are in safe hands. I look forward to working with her further in the future, both in my role as the MP for Wealden and as the Maritime Minister.”
