Wealden MP Nus Ghani took part in a celebration of the centenary of women getting the vote for the first time in Westminster, by inviting an aspiring Wealden woman up to Parliament for #AskHerToStand day.
#AskHerToStand day is all about getting more women involved in politics at every level, and Nus joined hundreds of other MPs by inviting aspiring women from their constituencies to shadow them for the day in Westminster and take part in celebratory events and commemorations.
Jeannette Towey, a Wealden District Councillor in Crowborough, joined Nus for the day, as Nus shared her daily job as the MP for Wealden and as a Minister in the Department for Transport.
The day was organised by campaigners Frances Scott, 50:50 Parliament, Helen Pankhurst and the Centenary Action Group, the Fawcett Society and the Jo Cox Foundation, which Nus has previously worked with in her campaign to tackle social isolation.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “Throughout the year, I have been taking part and running a series of events to mark the centenary of women getting the vote for the first time.
“I was delighted to welcome Jeannette to Parliament to see how things work in Westminster, and to encourage her to get more involved in politics.
“Jeannette is one of many fantastic women councillors in Wealden, but at all levels in politics, from the grass roots to Westminster, we have two men for every one woman.
“We need to do more to encourage more women to stand at any level, for any party. To be truly representative, politics needs to reflect everyday life, so I would encourage anybody interested in getting more involved in politics to get in touch – I’d be delighted to do my bit to help.”
